Symphony No. 4

Honoring the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s death, Maestro Diemecke programs an opening night concert that celebrates Mahler as both a conductor and composer. Mahler studied at the Vienna Conservatory and later became director of the Vienna Court Opera before spending the last years of his career as music director of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic, where he earned high praise as an expert interpreter of Tchaikovsky and Wagner.

WagnerTristan und Isolde - Prelude & Liebestod

Richard Wagner’s inventive use of harmony and tonality provided inspiration to Strauss, Schöenberg and Mahler, laying the groundwork for 20th century classical music. A Wagner specialist, Mahler’s debut performance at the Met was Tristan und Isolde in 1908.

Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 4

Tchaikovsky’s epic Symphony No. 4 is a powerful work written while traveling in Vienna in the aftermath of his catastrophic marriage that he thought would quell rumors of his homosexuality.
