BRAHMS
Symphony No. 3
Brahms – Hungarian Dances (Nos. 4-6)
German-born Johannes Brahms spent much of his professional life as a leader of the musical scene in Vienna. The folk rhythms in these dances were influential in the early development of Scott Joplin and ragtime music.
Dvořák – Concerto for Violoncello
Cécilia Tsan, cello
Written in 1895 in New York, Dvořák's final solo concerto is brought to life by LBSO Principal Cellist Cécilia Tsan. Brilliant technically as well as emotionally, Dvorak pays a musical tribute to the muse of a lost love.
Brahms – Symphony No. 3
From brothel pianist to Beethoven's heir-apparent, Brahms' popularity and influence led to his being referred to as one of the "three B's"—along with Bach and Beethoven. This Symphony debuted in Vienna and enjoyed greater success than anything he had written to date.
